00:00 Resolution (09.27.06 - Town Ballroom, Buffalo, New York)16:30 Rocker* (09.22.06 - Fillmore Auditorium, Denver, Colorado)23:42 Senor Mouse (09.07.06 - The Intersection, Grand Rapids, Michigan)32:22 Thin Air^ (09.08.06 - Robert J. Fischgrund Amphitheater, South Bend, IN)43:06 2nd Self >49:04 “Jimmy Stewart” (09.29.06 - Higher Ground, Burlington, Vermont)60:29 Pay the Snucka (09.30.06 - Higher Ground, Burlington, Vermont)Total Broadcast Length 74:22Notes:* with Brendan on acoustic^ with Jamie Magera on guitarThe Resolution that opened the two-week East Coast swing would set the tempo for much of the band’s style for the rest of the year. Often times playing without a setlist, every song was a potential springboard that could lead into extended improv. Chick Corea’s Senor Mouse is among the most difficult covers that Umphrey’s tackles. Jake and Brendan welcomed their old guitar teacher, Jamie Magera, on-stage to pay respect to the man responsible for introducing them to many of the stylings that define their sound today. The 2nd Self is another example of the open-ended improvisation, as the band traverses through several different moods. Astute listeners may recognize a Jake lego from the 6/2/06 Great American, one of the tracks on “Jimmy Stewart” The Second Album.
00:00 Hurt Bird Bath (02.24.06 - The P?geant, St. Louis, Missouri)20:52 August >24:43 “Jimmy Stewart”* >34:31 August >44:27 Roulette (02.10.06 - The Rave Hall, Milwaukee, Wisconsin)49:09 The Haunt >54:03 “Jimmy Stewart” 62:58 In the Kitchen^ (02.23.06 - Bogart’s, Cincinnati, Ohio)Total Broadcast Length 79:55Notes:* with lyrics^ with Nick Blasky (Ray’s Music Exchange) on bass One of the most exploratory Hurt Bird Bath’s to date shows Umphrey’s willingness to expand their songs far beyond their typical boundaries. Astute listeners may pick up on a bass line “lego” in the jam out of August into Roulette. It has previously appeared in Podcast #11 and was a foundation for a lyrical “Jimmy Stewart.” Nick Blasky’s guest spot during In the Kitchen demonstrates why he has an open invitation to sit in. His band, Ray’s Music Exchange, and UM have played many shows together over the years.
00:00 - Der Bluten Kat (11.12.05 - Fillmore Auditorium, Denver, Colorado)27:29 - Push the Pig >39:51 - Slacker (11.17.05 - 9:30 Club, Washington, D.C.)47:28 - Robot World >55:26 - Norwegian Wood >60:57 - Walletsworth (11.19.05 - Irving Plaza, New York, New York)66:58 - Heart and Soul*70:39 - Pay the Snucka (11.18.05 - Irving Plaza, New York, New York)Total Broadcast Length 79:56Notes: * with Huey Lewis on vocalsUmphrey’s McGee opened up at the Denver Fillmore with, one of their oldest tunes and concert staples, the epic Der Bluten Kat. The post-rock Robot World leads into the band’s unique interpretation of Norwegian Wood. Huey Lewis guests on a cover of one of his tunes, Heart and Soul, continuing the relationship started at the Jammy’s in 2005, and continuing to his guest slots on Safety in Numbers.
00:00 - Sociable Jimmy >07:42 - Jazz Odyssey >14:43 - Partyin’ Peeps (10.25.05 - Marquee Theatre, Tempe, Arizona)21:21 - Divisions >35:09 - Sweetness* >43:25 - Divisions (10.01.05 - Barrymore Theater, Madison, Wisconsin)48:47 - Making Flippy Floppy >54:13 - “Jimmy Stewart”^ >71:26 - Mulche’s Odyssey (10.12.05 - Blue Cats, Knoxville, Tennessee)Total Broadcast Length 81:03Notes: * with Bridgeless jam^ with Nachos for Two teases; with lyricsThe mixed-meter Sociable Jimmy slides into a soaring Jazz Odyssey, before slipping into the unique slow Partyin’ Peeps intro. The rare Sweetness inside of Divisions was a treat, while the Bridgeless jam that followed teased the fans (the band delivered said song the following evening). The Talking Heads’ Making Flippy Floppy is a springboard for extended improvisation including a tease of the no-longer-played Nachos for Two.
