00:00 - In Violation of Yes - (09.14.05 - Avalon, Boston, Massachusetts)07:40 - Syncopated Strangers >11:38 - “Jimmy Stewart” >17:55 - Syncopated Strangers - (09.09.05, Water Street Music Hall, Rochester, NY)21:50 - The Fuzz >33:01 - All Things Ninja - (09.13.05 - Pearl Street Ballroom, Northampton, MA)45:50 - 2×2 - (09.11.05 - Higher Ground, South Burlington, Vermont)58:27 - Phil’s Farm - (09.29.05 - The Canopy Club, Urbana, Illinois)Total Broadcast Length 75:17Notes: Jake Cinninger switches from guitar to bass guitar while Ryan Stasik moves over to the Fender Rhodes on the opening track, In Violation of Yes, which originally appeared on Joel Cummins’ 2002 solo album Common Sense. All Things Ninja, a concert rarity these days, ventures into some of the more dark and dissonant territory that UM can explore. The closing combination of 2×2 and Phil’s Farm mark the podcast debut of these two songs that have been staples of the repertoire since the earliest days in 1998.
00:00 - Slacker^ - (05.08.05 - Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, California)11:49 - Partyin’ Peeps20:04 - The Bottom Half - (05.07.05 - Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, CA)33:34 - Example 1 >43:17 - Jazz Odyssey >50:50 - Great American >55:00 - Mulche’s Odyssey - (05.06.05 - Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, CA)63:16 - All in Time - (05.08.05 - Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, California)Total Broadcast Length 76:37Notes: ^ with Eric Levy (Garaj Mahal) on keysUmphrey’s spent three nights in San Francisco at the historic Great American Music Hall. We are featuring selections from those special evenings in this Podcast. San Francisco-native Eric Levy stops by to add his unique key stylings on Slacker. The Bottom Half from 05.07 was on the receiving end of some excellent improvisation that will give the listener a much different impression of that song than the version from Podcast #4. The frenetic ending of Mulche’s from 05.06 is followed by All In Time, one of the band’s most immediately recognizable tunes.
00:00 - Divisions - (03.07.05 - Exit/In, Nashville, Tennessee)19:56 - “Jimmy Stewart”^* - (03.11.05 - Variety Playhouse, Atlanta, Georgia)31:04 - explanation of the title for Miss Tinkle’s Overture33:30 - Miss Tinkle’s Overture42:08 - FF >45:08 - “Jimmy Stewart”^ >50:28 - Walletsworth (03.09.05 - WorkPlay, Birmingham, Alabama)55:37 - Jimmy Stewart”^ (03.08.05 - Blue Cats, Knoxville, Tennessee)63:39 - Hurt Bird Bath* - (03.09.05 - WorkPlay, Birmingham, Alabama)Total Broadcast Length 79:52Notes: ^ with improvised vocals* with Napoleon Dynamite theme teases* with Peter Gunn theme teases and Paradise City (Guns N ‘Roses) jamThe band’s week long tour through the south yielded some gem “Jimmy Stewarts” that everyone should check out. Each of the three “Stewarts” in this episode are of the rare lyrical variety. The Atlanta and Knoxville “Stewarts” could easily be confused as songs to the untrained listener. The Pearl Jam-tinged Birmingham “Stewart” is a nice treat for the children of the 90s in us all. The explanation of the title for Miss Tinkle’s Overture gives us at least a little bit of insight into the band’s song naming conventions (unconventional as they are). For those unfamiliar with the “Jimmy Stewart”, be sure to check out this write-up.
